DOGS

Firstly I would like to say a big thank you to my two super stewards and to the hard working committee.

This has always been one of my favourite shows, the relaxed atmosphere and the outside venue, with exhibitors able to put up gazebo’s and tents, just make it a very enjoyable day.

My overall impressions of the dogs on the day were a little mixed, it was disappointing to find quite a few weak under jaws and long loins, on the plus side I found many dogs that ticked all the right boxes for me.

Minor Puppy (3:0)
1st Ferringo’s, Chillibears Always a Knight, 6 mth dark slate baby, head is very promising with nice length and breadth to foreface, and a good back skull, adequate length of neck down to nicely angled front assembly, rib shows nice shape and depth for age, short loin, moved very steadily for one so young,.

2nd Salter’s : Bargemon Mabuni Kenzo, another 6 mth baby, Slightly taller, longer framed than the winner, another very promising lad, similar remarks to the winner apply here, very raw at the moment, but should be worth waiting for.

3rd Bramley & Robinsons, Thingamebob Rudy Valentino.

Image: Best Bearded Collie Puppy

Puppy (4:1)
Three very different puppies.
1st Harrisons, Hisnhers Diamond Geezer at Anfranjo, Brown and white 11 mth lad, Good head properties, with a nice eye, nicely arched neck leading to well angulated front, correctly shaped and depth to rib and nice length, hind angulations is good, although I would prefer just a little more length to his leg and roundness to his croup. He moves very well from all angles but he has a tendency to twist his tail when on the move, which can detract from his movement,. Best Puppy Dog and the referees decision BPIS.

2nd Abbot’s Wightbeards Ocean Venture, masculine slate lad , very nice balanced head with a dark eye, arched neck moving down to a good front end, he has a good rib cage that has depth and length, he has good angulations behind , when he settled and moved he showed that he had good length of stride and was sound coming and going.

3rd Cornfords, Pattishawl Image of Dreams

Image: nicklebys bearded collie

Junior (11:1)
1st Moffats, NicklebysTailor Made or Kyleca, (Imp) 13 mth slate male, very masculine. Really lovely head properties, arch neck, leading to a well laid shoulder with good length to upper arm, his rib is deep, long with correct shape. His hind angels are complimentary to his front, with construction like this you would expect him to be able to move effortlessly which he did , covering the ground with ease.
One I will watch for the future.

2nd Andrews, Malandex Xplicity Made for Hecatie. Brown / white 17 mth lad, not as masculine as lst, for me, I would prefer a stronger head and under jaw, he has a nicely arch neck, leading to a very good front assembly, his rib has good shape, depth and length. He earned his place on his sound easy movement and length of stride in profile.

3rd White & Ellis Karmeliann Stargazer.

4 Kershaw's Deedledee Jayzee

5 Abbotts' Wightbeards Ocean Venture

Image: Malandex Xplicitly Made for Hecatie

Yearling (5:1)
1st Andrew : Malandex Xplicity Made for Hecatie.

2nd Richardson’s Caramac Change The Beat , brown / white, another very promising young dog very elegant outline, balanced head and soft eye, arched neck , sloping down to a lovely layback of shoulder and length to upper arm, rib is of good depth, shape and length, complimented with a matching back end, he moved well if lacking a little enthusiasm. For me I would like just a bit more of him all through.

3rd.Knights Carbow Cosmic Creation.

4 Groenier's Braemoor's Mastermind

Image: Veteran Bearded Collie

Special Veteran (11:5)
This and the Special Vintage were lovely classes to judge, and all those present are a credit to their owners and the breed.

1st Ferringos Chillibears I’m The One. Plainly marked slate, very masculine with a strong head and dark eye, lovely angles all through, and his rib is deep and long, on the move he moved soundly retaining his top line , showing plenty of reach and drive in profile.

2nd Pickup’s Bendale Time After Time, dark slate , lovely head and expression, dark eye, nice arch to neck, shoulder is well laid back, with good length to upper arm, chest is deep, and the rib is long, he has a very nice rear end, another who moved easily around the ring.

3rd Mccawley, Braddabrook Dunnett.

4 Lewry & Lewis' Potterdale Miami Storm

5 Burscough's Kilfinan Blue Moon

6 Poore's Sammara Over The Border at Bluelyn

Image: Bethlyntee (BAXTER)

Special Vintage (3:0)

1st,Dumbrell & Lindsay CH Bethlyntee Bannock, dark brown and white gentleman, who belies his 11 years, in such fine fettle. A lovely head and expression with a dark soft eye, nicely arched neck leading to lovely front assembly with matching rear angulations, deep long rib cage, thoroughly enjoying his day and this showed in his movement, very sound from any angle, showing lovely reach and drive in profile, BVIS, in the challenge for Best Veteran in show he certainly showed that “there is life in the old dog yet” as he really liked the best Veteran bitch !.

2nd Cornford’s Medmerry Dawn Raider. Another lovely lad, who pushed the winner all the way, and suffice to say that all the same remarks apply when it came his construction, he was unlucky to meet the winner who just pulled out all the stops today, in lovely condition.

3rd Pickups Bendale Boogie Woogie.

Image: Thingymybob Rudi Valentino

Maiden (3:0)

1st Bramley & Robinsons Thingamebob Rudy Valentino, 3rd in MPD, slate puppy, lovely outline in profile, soundly constructed all through, just a little raw at this time, more settled in this class and so he moved much better.

2nd.Grover’s Breaksea Who Done It. Dark slate, another very nice youngster who does himself no favours, very sound all through, who needs more ringcraft if he is to do himself justice.

Good eye colour, nicely arched neck that leads into good front angulations, his rib is deep and long, and his rear end compliments his front, Moved very well from all angles.

2nd Webb’s Potterdale Bilberry Blue and white, litter brother to the winner, slightly bigger than 1st, with a touch more elegance about him, construction wise there was very little to split them, both move very well.

3rd.Molloy’s Nellsbrook Unexpected or Pyesbridge.

4 Cornford's Pattishawl Just By Audition

5 Martin's Talibee Shining Star

Image: Diotima from the Heart for Gildenmead

Post Grad.(11:2)
Three lovely dogs in a strong class .

1st. Glasspool’s Diotima From The Heart For Gildenmede. Lovely elegant dark slate dog who commands that you look at him, masculine head with soft expression, gentle arch to neck leading into lovely shoulder placement with good upper arm, his chest is deep and his rib is long, with a complimentary back end, he could do nothing but move with ease around the ring which he did, at just 2 ½ I feel that his best is yet to come, but he pushed hard today.

2nd.Gibb, Dychix Captain Black, Another lovely dog, again dark slate with a strong masculine head and dark eyes, very nice layback of shoulder and upper arm, deep chest with a long rib, nice turn of stifle on a balanced rear end enabled him to move round the ring with ease, it was hard to separate these two, on the final run round 1st clinched it with just having a bit more front reach.

1st Edinboro & Lewis’s Potterdale Pursuit. Dark slate, not a big dog but of good size, lovely head , expression and eye colour, nicely arched neck leading to a good layback of shoulder and a nice long upper arm, his chest is deep with good shape and length to rib, well angulated hind end with nice turn of stifle and low set hocks, he moves straight and true coming and going away from you, in profile he shows lovely reach and drive , he almost threw this class away by his exuberance , but the more he moved the better he went settling into a steady pace that showed just how effortlessly it was for him to maintain his rhythm around the ring. CC RBIS and Best Opposite Sex in Show.

2nd Felton’s Kittistone Sea Lord JW, slightly bigger mould than the winner, but such a cracking young male, another who is so well put together, Lovely head, eye and expression, well arched neck down to a lovely front assembly, he has correct length, depth and shape to his ribcage and his hind angulations compliments his front, He showed sound effortless movement from any angle, but for me I would have preferred to have seen him just a little more animated on the move.

5 Pickup's Pipadene Time To Recap

Open (5:0)
Another very strong class,

1st Lewis’s Ch Potterdale Pisces, dark slate masculine dog, I have always liked this lad, you have to lay your hands on him to appreciate him. Strongly made head with lovely eye and expression, well arched neck flowing down to a well laid shoulder and upper arm, rib is of correct shape and length with a short loin, strong well angulated rear with low set hocks, another who showed lovely length to his stride in profile, moved soundly coming and going, today he had to settle for the Res CC to his son.

2nd Fox & Farrier’s Ch Bushblades Transaction, Mid slate young man, have watched him for some time and it was lovely to have the chance to put my hands on him, I was not disappointed. Another who has a lovely head and expression, nicely arch neck, down to a lovely front assembly, his chest has desired depth, length and shape, nicely angulated rear with good turn of stifle and low set hocks, pushed the winner hard, a worthy champion.

Caroline Nicholson (Shilstone)

Bitches

What a wonderful show with big rings and Garden Party atmosphere. Overall I was pleased with what I found. However there is far more variation in type , construction and movement than when I last judged bitches. There has always been depth of quality in Beardie bitches but this strength appears to be threatened. There was a lot of variation in head types with the lovely classic head and expression becoming a minority. I found an increase in untypical longer narrow muzzles with lack of stop and narrow under-jaws. There were several mouth problems and dirty teeth, a canine going into the opposing jaw, worn incisors in a youngster from a level bite and a number of blunted canines-one can only wonder at the reason why. Also notable were weak pasterns , short ribcages and barrel ribs.
Movement was very variable but correct Beardie movement was exhibited in my winners and such a pleasure to watch. I awarded the CC to Ch Westbere Whisper who on the referee’s decision went on to win BIS. Her correct balanced construction enabled her to flow round the ring effortlessly.
